New Year, No Plastic: A Pledge to Reduce 1,000,000 Plastic Bottles From Landfills
PILLLAR, being the world's first climate positive skateboard company, was founded on the idea that starting a skate company that is as conscious about their environmental impact as they are about their impact on the skate industry, is a good start, but in order to make real impact on climate change, it will take businesses, government and individuals alike to change how they think about their impact on the environment and what actions they can respectively take in order to slow the effects of human-made climate change.
We started PILLLAR with making the decision to use only biodegradable, recycled or environmentally friendly materials in all of our packaging and apparel. We then launched the One Board, One Tree initiative where we partnered with the National Forest Foundation to plant a tree for every board we sell. And then committed to donate 1% of all net profits to the Climate Emergency Fund, which is a non-profit organization that invests in radical action as opposed to incremental change to disrupt the status quo, inspire others to do the same and force policy-makers to take action on climate.
These were the first steps in creating the blueprints for how a skateboard company can stay true to skateboarding, but also run a business in a more sustainable and eco-friendly way, while still being profitable.
In 2021, our focus is to continue those efforts, however we're also expanding to create opportunities for individuals to understand their impacts on the environment and give them ways that they can make small changes in their daily lives, that in aggregate, with many people making those same changes, will have a positive impact on the environment.
The first such initiative is our New Year, No Plastic pledge.
Our goal with this initiative is to reduce 1,000,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills in 2021. When people commit to use reusable bottles instead of plastic, it will show industry that single-use plastic is no longer the way consumers are choosing to purchase goods.
All of that being said, we're also realists and understand that we live in a society that runs on plastic, which makes it nearly impossible to go plastic free. However, with this pledge you're taking the first step to a no-plastic lifestyle and getting in the habit of saying no to plastic bottles. We're even helping out by sending each person that signs the pledge a free reusable bamboo bottle as a reminder to ditch the plastic.
In the big picture of over 60,000,000 plastic bottles entering landfills in the United States every day, reducing by 1,000,000 is just a drop in the preverbal bucket, but it is a start. If we can start reducing the demand for plastic and show that this new generation of consumers will rely more heavily on reusables, we can have a compounding impact on the amount of plastic manufactured and thrown away.
When I think and talk about the individual aspect of climate change and our impact on the environment, I constantly hear and read all of the people that say "it's the businesses that have to fix the problem. Their impact is so much larger than mine." while that is true and businesses will be a huge part in having to make substantial changes in how they operate, I'm reminded of this quote by Howard Zinn:
"We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world."
